Someplace to Go with Dr. Victoria Sweet

How were the sick taken care of in the days before health insurance? Is there anything we can learn from this earlier model?
In this talk Dr. Victoria Sweet will remind us of the old way of taking care of those who couldn’t take care of themselves by putting them in county hospitals, almshouses, sanitaria, and asylums. It was a flawed way, unequal but adequate. As Oliver Sacks pointed out, asylums, while imperfect, did provide asylum. Everyone was taken care of, regardless; everyone had someplace to go.
Dr. Sweet is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF and Guggenheim Fellow, and author of God’s Hotel and Slow Medicine.
