Getting under San Francisco’s skin: A deep dive into the strangest neighborhood in the cool, gray city of love

Most American cities used to have skid rows in the heart of downtown. They’ve all been developed and gentrified out of existence — but not in San Francisco. Bestselling author Gary Kamiya explores why.

Gary Kamiya is the author of the bestselling book Cool Gray City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco, which was awarded the 2013 Northern California Book Award in creative nonfiction. His first book was the critically acclaimed Shadow Knights: The Secret War Against Hitler. He was a founder and longtime executive editor of the pioneering web site Salon.com and the former executive editor of San Francisco Magazine. His work has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, Sports Illustrated, ArtForum, Mother Jones, Sierra and many other publications. His history column, “Portals of the Past,” appears every other Saturday in the San Francisco Chronicle. He lives on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco.
