Stairways of San Francisco, with Alexandra Kenin
When a pandemic hits and far-off travel is no longer possible, what is one to do? San Francisco resident and avid urban hiker Alexandra Kenin asked herself this question and decided to explore the wonders of her own backyard on foot. Starting out with walks just outside her Mission District home, her neighborhood expeditions morphed into a quest to document all of San Francisco’s 1,000+ public stairways.
Over the last year Alexandra has walked and run throughout the city to chip away at her goal. Join us as Alexandra guides us through the genesis of her project, how she located these stairways, and how she managed to visit 1,000 (and counting) of them so far.
Since 2012, Alexandra Kenin has been helping visitors and locals explore San Francisco’s history via stairways, hills and hiking trails through her company Urban Hiker SF. She has written two Bay Area hiking guidebooks: Urban Trails: San Francisco (2016) and Urban Trails: East Bay (2020). When she’s not out on the trails, she works at a content and design agency, Wordsmithie.
