Dick Spotswood will recount the forgotten history of why BART never came to Marin. Spotswood, a past director of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, frequently discusses transportation issues in his Marin Independent Journal column. In the 1960s there was a widespread and popular belief that Marin should and would grow its population exponentially. Plans for new bridges and rapid transit connections to San Francisco’s Financial District proliferated. The story of why none of these visions never came to fruition is mostly a tale of exploding expenses.Today it’s forgotten that the demise of those futuristic plans were made over the opposition of most Marinites. The upshot is that abandonment of those dreams made the Marin of today both idyllic and expensive.
