February First Wednesday Program Gallery

Bob Flasher was the speaker at the February First Wednesday program.  The subject was Druid Heights, an “unintentional community” near Muir Woods.  The standing room only audience was fascinated to learn about the “beatnik” enclave which was in full swing during the fifties and sixties. The architecture of  the buildings designed and built by Roger Somers and Ed Stiles was incredible. Scores of sculptors, sex rebels, stars and seekers lived or visited there. Some of the more famous were Alan Watts, Gary Snyder, Dizzy Gillespie, John Handy, Neil Young, Tom Robbins and the colorful prostitute activist Margo St. James.
